Pre-Select

The University of Alabama’s Department of Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management is pleased to have established agreements for pre-select with four (4) Dietetic Internships. Two options are available to UA students to participate in pre-select.

Priority Pre-Select (Aramark and Morrison only)

Priority Pre-Select (PPS) is an option available to students who have either completed the MS in Human Nutrition at The University of Alabama or are enrolled in the MS in Human Nutrition. Students may be priority pre-selected into either the Aramark Dietetic Internship or the Morrison Healthcare Dietetic Internship. Applications are due during the fall semester, with notification of acceptance prior to the start of the spring semester. Supervised practice in the Dietetic Internship will start in August, following acceptance.

Students will be advised to take graduate courses to align with the requirements of the Dietetic Internship.

Application Requirements
To apply for priority pre-select to the Aramark or Morrison Healthcare Dietetic Internship programs, students must…

  • Be admitted into or have completed the MS in Human Nutrition at the University of Alabama
    • Previously completed MS in Human Nutrition
    • Currently enrolled in MS program (DPD completed previously)
    • Current/Former MS+DPD
    • Accelerated Master’s program (AMP)
    • BS/DPD from UA completed prior to selection date, with confirmed acceptance into MS program
  • Be in good academic standing (no academic warning or suspension) at the time of application
  • Complete an application through the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS) and any required supplemental documents (see internship websites for details)
    • Notify those writing letters of recommendation of the earlier deadline
    • Request your transcript(s) so that they can be posted to your DICAS account
    • Confirm that your DPD verification statement or declaration of intent to complete the DPD is posted in DICAS prior to the due date
  • Submit an unofficial transcript from the most recently completed semester at UA, by the second Wednesday of December
  • Notify BOTH the dietetic internship program director and Dr. Elaine Molaison (efmolaison@ches.ua.edu) of your intent to apply to pre-select

Progression Requirements
To start supervised practice after being admitted into priority pre-select, students must…

  • Maintain good academic standing and meet all grade requirements in the MS in Human Nutrition degree program after admission to PPS (no academic warning or suspension) and complete any degree requirements to receive a verification statement at the completion of the DI
  • Submit an official transcript showing at least a baccalaureate degree has been completed and a signed DPD verification statement to the dietetic internship, indicating completion of a DPD program prior to starting supervised practice in August
  • Have successfully completed at least 12 hours of graduate credit in the MS in Human Nutrition, including NHM 566 (Advanced Clinical Nutrition) and NHM 587 (Integrated Food Systems Management)
  • Plan to take NHM 585 (Clinical Nutrition Management) and NHM 588 (Advanced Foodservice Systems Management) during the DI, if the graduate degree is not completed prior to supervised practice

Anticipated Timeline

  • October: Initiate DICAS application (see DICAS website for opening date to upload application)
  • November 18: Submit completed application through DICAS to PPS internship programs and notify program director and efmolaison@ches.ua.edu of intent to participate in pre-select
  • November 18: Submit graduate school application to MS in Human Nutrition, if not previously admitted
  • 2nd Wednesday in December: Submit transcript from fall semester
  • December 15-18: Notification of acceptance into pre-select; applicant must contact program director within 72 hours of acceptance to confirm appointment
  • August: Deadline to complete at least 12 hours of graduate coursework, including NHM 566 and 587; provide DPD verification statement to DI; Begin supervised practice
  • May: Complete all DI and MS requirements
    • Note—some students may require an additional semester to complete the DI

Pre-Select (Aramark, KADDI, KBDI, & Morrison)
Pre-select is available to DPD or MS in Human Nutrition students at The University of Alabama. Additionally, students must either have completed, be enrolled in, or accepted into the MS in Human Nutrition at The University of Alabama with intentions to complete the degree program. Programs that participate in pre-select include Aramark, KADDI, KBDI, and Morrison).

Application Requirements
To apply for pre-select, students must…

  • Meet at least one of the following criteria
    • BS/DPD from UA
    • DPD only from UA
    • Previously completed MS in Human Nutrition
    • Currently enrolled in MS in Human Nutrition (DPD completed previously)
    • Current/Former MS+DPD
    • Accelerated Master’s program (AMP)
  • Complete an application through the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS) and any required supplemental documents (see internship websites for details)

  • Maintain admission to the MS in Human Nutrition and complete any degree requirements to receive a verification statement at the completion of the DI

What do I do if I am not accepted in the pre-select process?

  • ​Apply through the D&D computer match!
  • You can still apply to the program where you attempted pre-select
  • Add additional programs to the ranking, if desired
