The Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Program at the University of Alabama provides graduate students with high quality training in the theory, skills, and professional identity essential to competent practice in the field of marriage and family therapy. Students graduate equipped to treat a wide variety of individual, couple, and family mental health issues with diverse populations. The UA MFT Program meets licensure requirements for the State of Alabama.
WHAT IS MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY
Marriage and Family Therapy is a mental health profession that focuses on systemic thought in training practitioners in a variety of theories in order to customize help for individual, couple, and family concerns.
WHO ARE MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS?
- Marriage and Family Therapists treat a wide range of clinical concerns including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, substance abuse, relationship concerns, child-parent problems, and child/adolescent issues.
- Marriage and Family Therapists believe that family, couple, and even individual problems are best treated in the context of the system. MFTs take a “both/and” approach to working with problems, focusing on helping the individual person while at the same time changing the way the system works. This makes for effective and long lasting change.
- Marriage and Family Therapists are able to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders.
- Marriage and Family Therapists can become licensed mental health practitioners in all 50 states.
