ACADEMIC ADVISING

All students in the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design are assigned to an academic advisor or a faculty advisor. Please check your DegreeWorks to identify your advisor.

If you have not been assigned an advisor, please contact Mrs. Brynna Cockrell at btrefny@ches.ua.edu.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they are advised and registered within a timely manner. Delaying advising and/or registration may result in necessary classes being full. We strongly encourage students to pursue an advising appointment several weeks before the registration period begins.

Advising for the Summer and/or Fall semesters will begin in March.
Advising for the Spring semester will begin in October.

Advising appointments are offered in-person and virtually, using Zoom. Upon scheduling a virtual advising appointment, you will receive an email that includes a link to join the meeting at your scheduled time. The appointment scheduling system will only show available appointment slots 24 hours out. If you attempt to schedule an appointment and there are no availabilities, check for a different time or day.

For additional questions, please contact your advisor directly.

Before your Advising Session

  1. Review your DegreeWorks

Log into DegreeWorks, confirm that your major and minor are correct, and look through your remaining course requirements.

  2. Review your registration information

    Examples:

    • Course planning
    • Major/minor options

Please note:

  • Appointment availability is only visible 24 hours in advance in the scheduling system.
  • If no appointments are available, students should check back later for additional time slots or select a different date.

Students should use the online scheduling system to reserve an advising appointment. Be sure to record the confirmed date and time on your calendar. Students are encouraged to bring notes and a laptop in order to access DegreeWorks during the appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can I find my assigned advisor?
You can locate your advisor in DegreeWorks or on your Academic Profile, both accessible through myBama.

  • MyBama > Student > Academic Records & Curriculum > Academic Profile
  • MyBama > Student > Degree Audit & Graduation > DegreeWorks

2. What is the best way to contact my advisor?
Students should contact their advisor using their Crimson email account. Please allow 24–48 business hours for a response.

3. Do I need to meet with my advisor every semester?
Yes. All CTD students are expected to meet with their assigned advisor each semester to discuss academic progress and future plans.

Students below a designated GPA threshold will have an advising PIN placed, which can only be cleared by their advisor during or after the advising appointment.

Advisors will notify students via email when appointments are open for a given term. It remains the student’s responsibility to schedule advising and register on time.

4. What is my classification?
Classification is based on earned credit hours. Your classification is listed in the top banner of DegreeWorks. This may not be equivalent to the year of the CTD course you are in.

  • Freshman: 0–30 hours
  • Sophomore: 31–60 hours
  • Junior: 61–90 hours
  • Senior: 91+ hours

A minimum of 120 earned credit hours is required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

5. How do I request an override?

For CTD course overrides, you will need to contact your assigned academic advisor. Please make sure to include your CWID, the course number, and the CRN. Please also list what type of override you are requesting. If you need an override for a course outside of CTD, you will need to contact the appropriate department.
