The College of Human Environmental Sciences has partnered with the Counseling Center and The Division of Student Life to provide an embedded therapist to our students. Sheila Calhoun serves as the embedded therapist for College of Human Environmental Sciences students. If you are experiencing anxiety, relationship concerns, or just simply having a bad day, it might be worth taking a preventive step toward increasing your wellness and success.
Types of Services:
Free Walk-in Student Counseling Hours (no appointment required)
- Tuesday 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
- Thursday 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Sheila can be available outside these times if her schedule permits. For emergency concerns, please contact the main Counseling Center or UAPD.
Single Session Consultations:
Appointments for single session or screening appointments can be scheduled with Sheila by calling the UA Counseling Center at 205-348-3863. These appointments are 30 minutes and are useful to explore needs, develop goals, or problem solve a specific and present concern. These appointments can also be a good entry point for students to engage the ET for ongoing therapy.
Brief Individual Counseling:
If determined following a consultation that consistent therapy could be helpful, individual counseling is provided through a brief treatment and goal-oriented model. Individual Counseling is $15 per session once a student is established as a client. This invoice shows up as a “student life charge” on the student’s account. Students have access to up to 15 sessions a year.
Support Groups
Sheila will provide support groups and workshops for CHES students as needs are identified. These groups will meet at fixed times during the semester and are free of charge. We will readily advertise the groups when they are available. We are seeking feedback on support groups CHES students would find beneficial. Please visit this short, anonymous survey to help us select topics.
Faculty and Staff Consultations:
Faculty and staff who have questions or concerns about a student. These “walk in sessions” times are each Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For emergency concerns, please contact the main Counseling Center.
Other Resources for Students
- Togetherall: Togetherall is an confidential, online, peer support community. It is free of charge to UA students and can be an excellent way to give and receive support for mental health.
- Free mental health screenings: This is a free web-based screening tool that helps students answer questions about their health and wellbeing and get feedback about their functioning. You will not be asked for any identifying information and your responses will be anonymous. The screenings are also available in Spanish.
