HSM 469:  Internship in Hospitality (150 Industry hours = 3-hour course)


  • Hospitality Management majors are required to complete HSM 469 for 3 credit hours.
  • 150 hours = must be worked and documented while enrolled in HSM 469   

Steps To Be Completed for HSM 469:

  1. Before the Semester: 
  2. Meet with your advisor and plan when you should take HSM 469.
  3. Complete the Internship Approval Packet and send to Mrs. Boyle (kboyle@ches.ua.edu) for approval.
  4. Once approved, an override will be issued, and you will receive instructions for registering for HSM 469.
  • Week OneAttend Mandatory Class Meeting.
  • During the Semester:
  • Access Blackboard for course schedule, Adobe Portfolio requirements, and assignment instructions.
  • Submit Facility-Student Agreement signed by supervisor and student.  
  • Create an Adobe Portfolio:
    • Home Page (include your name, name of hospitality organization where work/internship experience was completed, company logo, and picture)
    • Goals and Goals Evaluation
    • Position Information
    • Operations Assignment
    • Overall Work Experience
    • Organization Chart
    • Supervisory Skills Assignments
    • Segment Specific Assignments
    • Instagram Post
    • Pictures: Include a minimum of 10 pictures (picture of you in your uniform in front of company sign, events, property, you in action, etc.)

  • How do I document my hours?
    • Pay stubs
    • Official letter from the employer/supervisor typed on company letterhead
  • When do I submit my hours documentation?
    • You will receive instructions for submitting hours documentation once you are enrolled in HSM 469.
  • What if I have work experience that is not in the hospitality industry or a related field?
    • Work experience outside of the hospitality industry cannot be used for HSM 469.
