Our advising philosophy centers on supporting students as whole individuals academically, professionally, and personally while offering an unconditional welcome to every student we serve. We aim to provide accurate guidance, timely communication, and a space where students feel valued, respected, and empowered. Advisors partner with students to help them understand program requirements and make informed decisions that align with their goals. We are committed to guiding students toward becoming responsible, ethical professionals who contribute meaningfully to their communities. Ultimately, we strive to equip students with the confidence, clarity, and support needed to take ownership of their academic journeys and future careers.

  • Come with questions! We are happy to help guide you in your education.
  • Follow through on registering for classes recommended by your advisor to ensure you stay on track during your degree.

If you have further questions that are not answered in the FAQ’s below, please reach out to bsphadvising@ua.edu

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my Advisor?

You can find who your advisor is on your Degree Works page. You can also find it on your Academic Profile. You can find both of these pages on your Student MyBama. You will go to MyBama > Student > Academic Records sand Curriculum > Academic Profile OR you can go to Student > Degree Audit and Graduation > Degree Works.

Do I have to meet with my advisor every semester?

Yes. Every Public Health student must meet with their advisor every semester to have their PIN cleared for registration. Your advisor will email you when they start taking appointments for that term's advising

What is the best way to contact my advisor?

The best way to contact your advisor is through your student email address. The advisors work Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with an hour break for lunch during that time. If you email your advisor outside of their working hours, please know they will get back to you during the appropriate hours.

How do I know my classification?

UA students are classified by earned credit hours. Freshman standing is 0-30 credit hours earned, Sophomore standing is 31-60 credit hours, Junior standing is 61-90 credit hours, and Senior standing is 91 credit hours or more. You must earn at least 120 credit hours to be able to graduate in the state of Alabama.

How do I get an override for a class?

For all public health (HHE) overrides, you will need to contact the advising email address. Please make sure to include your CWID and the course CRN. Please also list what type of override you are requesting. If you need an override for anything outside of public health courses, you will need to contact the appropriate department.
